My friend in Germany came across something very unusual at a Steiff auction, this beautiful Steiff purse.
Since I have never seen anything like it and could not find it in the Steiff book either, she made a call to the Steiff Museum in Giengen, Germany, and was told that years ago Steiff had hired private ladies to do some of their sewing, and they came up with wild ideas at times. Some of those ideas were taken over bei Steiff, and manufactured. This purse seems to be one of those “ideas”.
The bag itself, without the bears, is made of teddy-fur, from Steiff Schulte , Mohair, dark brown, measuring 8” x 8”.
It has a zipper on top and is fully lined with a dark brown colored material and a small side pocket.
The 2 bears, are fully jointed –you can bring arms and legs up across the purse, or straight down.
the bears measure 9” tall, have their button and flags, EAN 001208 Doing research on them I found that they are valued up to 5 each!!!!
are made of mohair and were made in the late 60’s to 90’.
Into the collar , on loops, a leather strap has been sewn which is approx. 40” long so you can use it as a shoulder bag.
A very unusual and beautiful piece – great for a teenager or adult!
