    Description

Rare New England Glass Company, Clear Flint Glass Salt with "Basket of Flowers", NE-3, The New England Glass Co., Boston, MA., c. 1840-1860. This is one of the rarest of all flint glass salts, it is marked "N.E. GLASS CO. BOSTON", on the base. This marked open salt dish of the New England Glass Company is a box-shaped, oblong, hexagonal salt, that flares slightly and has corner columns and small knob feet. The panels of the sides are decorated with baskets of fruit in relief and the end panels with a raised rose spray. There is one flower in full bloom, a bud to the right, two rose leaves, and a delicate branching stem. On the base, in an irregular oval-shaped recessed panel, is the four-line inscription, "N. E. Glass Company Boston," in raised letters not too clearly cut. In his book, Salt Dishes, C. W. Brown states that this salt dish, which occurs in clear and opalescent-white glass, was made in three different molds with minor variations. This example is Neal NE-3 and it is listed as very rare! I offer this salt with no reserve and a Buy It Now. Good Luck! DIMENSIONS: The salt is 2 1/16" H. x 2 3/16" W. x 2 15/16" L... CONDITION: The salt is in good condition with some minor chips and some roughness to the scalloped rim. There is one scallop near one corner that is mostly chipped. There are also straw marks, bubbles, sand and other imperfections typical of early flint glass. SHIPPING: Buyer pays actual shipping costs based upon the 1 pound and 11 ounces weight and postal zone. Please use the shipping calculator within this listing to calculate postage within the continental United States. This includes professional packing with USPS delivery.
