Description
EAPG Flint Glass Oval Bowl Thomas Cains or New England GlassThis early glass oval bowl is likely the work of either Thomas Cains who founded Boston’s first flint glass production company in 1813, or it may be from New England Glass (Cambridge MA).
Both manufacturers used the early 1800 technology of blown-over molded glass. [Wilson] This blown-over molded and engraved Oval Glass Bowl in diamond pattern has the thick grounded-flat rim indicative of the blown-over production method.
One example of a Cains’ oval shaped diamond pattern dish appears in Joan Kaiser’s book along with this information: “Primitive ‘Dishes, moulded, round’ and ‘dishes, moulded, oval” first appear under ‘ Cut, Plain, and Moulded Flint Glass Ware’ in the 1819

This bowl has been safely displayed behind glass in our hutch since we acquired it in Sandwich, MA in the 1970’s.
It is in nice estate condition and displays well. In certain light a pale purple hue is apparent in the glass. Some surface scratches; few bites, bubbles, few tiny manufacturing-debris specs within the glass diamond wall.
